This past weekend, I attended my second clinic and although it was only my second, I had one of the most beautiful and memorable experiences yet. The day started quite early, but being surrounded by members who radiated enthusiasm and excitement was able to wake me up! Being immersed in a positive environment where members were eager to get the day started really made me excited to work alongside them during clinic. Nonetheless, I knew it was going to be an amazing day.

All the fun started when Audrianna, Thomas and I were informed that we would be ubering to clinic. Yes, you read that correctly. We ubered to clinic, but that wasn’t even the most exciting part. Arriving to our pick-up location was the fun part because we had to walk across the border (which is something I’ve never done before) and then basically run across a really busy intersection to be picked up by our uber. It was quite an exhilarating experience that was filled with lots of laughter and ambivalence. From that moment on, I knew that this clinic was going to be an unforgettable one.

Once we got to clinic, it was time to work! This was my favorite part about the entire day because I got to work in consult and triage. I loved being a part of these rotations because it allowed me to interact with patients, healthcare professionals, and other IHC members! Most importantly, it allowed me to help members of the community get access to the healthcare services they needed. However, I think the most impactful experience for me was seeing how well all the members were able to work and communicate with each other. This is what made clinic so amazing for me. I was surrounded by individuals who shared similar goals and passions as I do. Everybody was driven to help the community as much as possible, and I could see this through the efficiency of everyone’s efforts. Through everyone’s work, I could see how much compassion, optimism, and passion poured through. This made me realize how fortunate I am to be able to work alongside such kind-hearted individuals who constantly work hard to make a positive difference in a community in need. This experience made me feel that I was finally part of a community that I have been longing to find for so long.

Furthermore, one of the best parts for me was getting to meet Jonathon for the first time. He was a cheerful, inquisitive 14 year old whom I met while waiting for patient’s files. Getting to speak to him made me feel closer to his community. Jonathon’s radiating positive energy and humor really uplifted me when I was feeling worn down. Jonathon also shared his goals and aspirations with me, which made me really happy because it demonstrated that he felt comfortable speaking with me. I hope I get to talk to Jonathon again!

As I reflect on my experience, my sense of gratitude and pride has grown immensely because I get to be part of an organization that is composed of individuals who genuinely want to make a difference. Most importantly, I feel that I have finally found a home because I am surrounded by people who constantly inspire me to become the best person I can be. Nonetheless, I can’t wait for the next clinic!
